Emotional Intelligence is nothing new. It's not a fad that is fashionable at the moment, it is the pulling together of a lot of the knowledge and infomation that has been looked at and researched for decades.
It is simple how we are able to manage ourselves and build better relationships with others. Emotional intelligence was popularised by Daniel Goldman with his books 'Emotional Intelligence' and 'Working with Emotional Intelligence'. It is measurable, there are many diffferent measurement tools and most importantly it is changeable. A definition of Emotional Intelligence: The capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves and for managing emotions in ourselves and others. Essentially: Understanding yourself Understanding others Managing yourself Influencing others It takes more than just brains to succeed in life - one must also be able to develop and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships. Taken from this perspective, emotional intelligence is nothing new. D. Goleman 75% of career derailment comes from deficits in emotional competence; Difficulty in handling change. Not working well in a team.Poor interpersonal relationships. 85-95% of the difference between a "good leader" and an "excellent leader" is due to emotional intelligence (Goleman, 1998). |
